How did King Charles 1 st. mess up on religion, power and money, which led to the civil war.
What was the main reason why the civil war started

Because he was a very arrogant little man who did not possess the political skills that his father had learnt trying to stay alive in Scotland. He thought that he was God's anointed, literally, and therefore he had to answer only to God for his actions. Like a succession of Stuart kings, he was a secret Catholic and was suspected by his protestant subjects of selling out to Rome, especially when he betrayed the Huguenots against an explicit commitment to Parliament to aid them. He then embarked on a series of money raising schemes that Parliament thought were illegal.
His attempts to rule failed because he could never learn to compromise or balance a budget, and as he drove the country deep into debt he was force to negotiate, but found that the price was to be the heads of his closest advisors. His attempt to arrest his leading Parliamentary critics led directly into the Civil War.
